Common problems and what usually causes them

No water, but the tank is full

Usually the pump, the tank float or a closed valve. A plumber will check the pump first.

Water bill suddenly jumped

Usually a hidden leak or a toilet that runs constantly. Turn off every tap and see if the meter still moves.

Drain blocked or backing up

Usually wipes, or grease in the kitchen. If more than one bathroom is blocked, it's probably the main line.

Sewage smell in the bathroom

Often a dried-out floor drain trap or poor ventilation. Pour water down the floor drain and see if it helps.

Damp patches on a wall

A sign of a leak inside the wall. Don't wait; the damage spreads to tiles and even wiring.

Water heater not heating

Usually the thermostat or the heating element. First check its breaker is switched on.

Before you agree with any plumber

  1. Get the price first

Ask: is the inspection free if they do the repair? Does the price include parts?

  2. Which parts?

Ask about the brand of tap, pump or heater, and see the part before it's fitted.

  3. Before any breaking

Ask them to find the leak first. Leak detection equipment avoids needless damage.

  4. Ask about the warranty

How long is the guarantee on the work? Get it in writing, even just on WhatsApp.

  5. Test before you pay

Run the water, flush the toilet, and check nothing drips after the repair.

  6. Photos and reviews

Look at photos of past work and genuine reviews from earlier customers.

Avoid problems in the first place

No wipes down the toilet

Even "flushable" wipes. They're the most common cause of blocked drains.

No grease down the sink

Oil cools and hardens inside the pipes. Let it cool and bin it.

Know where the main valve is

If a pipe bursts, you can shut off the water before the plumber arrives.

Clean the water tank

Once or twice a year protects the pump, the pipes and the water heater.

How much is a plumber's call-out?

Usually SAR 100–250, and some plumbers take it off the repair price if they do the job. Ask before they come.

How do I know if I have a hidden leak?

Turn off every tap and look at the water meter. If it still moves with everything off, there's probably a leak.
