Want to see your home from your phone when you're out? Here are rough prices for packages with installation, the difference between camera types, and what to check before it's fitted.

How much does CCTV installation cost in Riyadh?

Rough prices for homes. The final price depends on the number and resolution of the cameras, the recorder and the length of the cabling.

Common problems and what usually causes them

Black or blurry picture at night

The camera has weak night vision, or lights reflect into it. Colour night-vision cameras (ColorVu) make a big difference.

Can't see the cameras on your phone

Usually the internet dropped or the router changed. Ask the installer to show you how to reconnect.

Recordings get deleted quickly

The hard drive is small. Ask how many days it holds, and upgrade it if you want longer.

A camera keeps switching off

Usually the power adapter or the cable. Sun and heat wear out exposed adapters.

Dull picture or dust on it

Riyadh dust covers the lens. Wipe it every few months with a soft cloth.

The angle doesn't cover the spot

Plan the camera positions with the installer first: doors, entrances and the car park.

Before you agree with any CCTV installer

  1. Which brand and resolution?

Ask about the brand of cameras and recorder, and the resolution (2, 4 or 8 MP).

  2. Storage and app

How many days does it keep recordings? Is there a phone app in Arabic or English?

  3. Cabling

Are the cables hidden in conduit? Does the price include all the cabling?

  4. Warranty and support

How long is the warranty, and will they come back if a camera stops?

  5. The password

Ask them to change the default password and give it to you, so nobody else can get into your cameras.

  6. Photos and reviews

Look at past work and genuine reviews from earlier customers.

Tips for home cameras

Respect your neighbours' privacy

Point cameras at your own home and entrances, not at neighbours' houses or windows.

Clean the lenses

Wipe the dust off outdoor cameras every few months.

Keep passwords strong

Use a strong password for the app and recorder, and don't share it.

Test the recordings

Now and then, play back an old recording and check every camera is recording.
